Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the world, and it's an easy weekend from the Bay Area or Sacramento. Here's how to make the most of two days.
Day one: the west shore
Morning at Emerald Bay
Arrive early. Parking at Emerald Bay State Park fills quickly in summer. Walk the steep one-mile trail down to Vikingsholm, a 1920s Scandinavian-style mansion on the shore, or take in the view from Inspiration Point.
Afternoon on the water
Rent a kayak or paddleboard and paddle out over water so clear you can see the boulders many feet below. On calm days the lake looks like glass.

Evening in Tahoe City
Watch the sunset from the Commons Beach area, then grab dinner in town.
Day two: the east shore
Sand Harbor
Just across the Nevada line, Sand Harbor's turquoise coves and smooth boulders make it one of the most photographed spots on the lake. Arrive early in summer, as the lot fills fast.
Drive the loop
The full drive around the lake is about 72 miles. Without stops it takes around three hours, but you'll want to stop often.
When to visit
- Summer: warm days, cold water, busy beaches.
- Fall: quiet, golden aspens and crisp mornings. Our favorite.
- Winter: world-class skiing at resorts like Palisades Tahoe and Heavenly; carry chains.
- Spring: snowy peaks, empty trails, unpredictable weather.
Keep Tahoe blue
The lake's clarity is fragile. Stay on trails, pack out trash, and clean, drain and dry your boat or paddleboard to prevent invasive species.
