Straddling the California–Nevada line at about 6,200 feet, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and one of the deepest lakes in the United States. On a calm morning the water turns impossibly clear.

Summer is for beaches, kayaking and hiking; winter brings some of the best skiing in the West.
